Nizhny Novgorod is one of the largest cities in Russia (1.5 million residents), ranking after Moscow and St. Petersburg. It is known as part of the Russian heartland .
Nizhny Novgorod was founded in 1221 by the Grand Duke George II at the confluence of two great rivers (the Volga and the Oka). In the first few hundred years the city was attacked and burned by the Tatars several times. However, the Nizhny Novgorod Kremlin which was constructed approximately 500 years ago withstood the Tatar attacks. If you go sightseeing, you can see many impressive old buildings in the city centre, each one can tell you a story. In the 1700s, Nizhny Novgorod became the capital of the region, known as a centre for education, trade, medicine, and culture.
The city is home to the famous style of Russian applied art called Khokhloma. This Russian wood painting folk art uses vivid flower patterns painted in red and gold colours over a black background. It has always been bought and sold at the city fairs.
In different periods, Nizhny Novgorod has been known as Russia’s Purse, the Capital of the Volga River, and the Third Capital. During the Soviet Union era, the city was called Gorky after Maxim Gorky, a famous Russian author who was born in Nizhny Novgorod. The city grew as an industrial centre and was closed to foreigners. During the Soviet Union era it excelled in the ship construction. It also produced riverboats, railroad cars, MIG fighters.
Currently Nizhny Novgorod is accessible to everybody. It is progressive and vibrant, with a highly educated work force, one of the most democratic cities in Russia. It offers to tourists and citizens numerous cultural activities including opera, ballet, drama and comedy performances. The city also hosts a Philharmonic orchestra, as well as numerous museums and art galleries.
In light of the vast quantity of unique historical, architectural, and cultural monuments located in Nizhny Novgorod, UNESCO included Nizhny Novgorod on the list of 100 world cities, representing significant value in world history and culture.
